Columbus; Donovan Lewis; Carlos Buford;
The funeral Saturday of an unarmed Black man shot and killed by Columbus Police this month drew a packed crowd who are demanding such killings stop. Police shot and killed Donovan Lewis in his Columbus apartment last week while serving an overnight warrant for his arrest. His visitation and funeral were held at Christian Valley Missionary Baptist Church.
“Everyone is tired of the ease of shooting people and getting away with it. We’re tired,” Carlos Buford Saturday, with Black Lives Matter Dayton, said. “This has got to stop. This country, this state, they know they have a problem with policing in all these cities and nothing is happening.”
Last week, Columbus Police released body camera video of the fatal shot fired by K9 Officer Ricky Anderson that killed Lewis at 3:00 a.m. when he was unarmed and in bed. His warrants were all misdemeanors and included domestic violence, assault and improper handling of a firearm. This week, CPD shifted policy to end the issuing of most overnight warrants that are misdemeanor-level or nonviolent felonies.
