Description
Beer in one hand and a bag in the other. This is usually how it works with cornhole — the game popular at barbecues, tailgates and restaurants where boneless wings are fine dining. At least, that’s how it works for people not named Ryan Smith, who is one of the top professional cornhole players in the United States. On competition days, he occasionally sips Bud Light, but he leaves the alcohol behind when it’s time to go head-to-head with some of the best bag throwers out there. “It’s grown so much and these prize pools are so huge, so I want to be bringing my A-game all the time,” he explains. Indeed, by tossing a one-pound bag onto a wooden board, this 30-year-old project supervisor from Herndon, Va., made about $10,000 last year. He’s unwilling to disclose the exact amount: “Can we just say 2019 was a good year?”
